The service I received from Brighton and Hove Law, and from Lucy in particular, has been absolutely incredible and I can’t thank Lucy enough. She has been super professional, provided me with detailed and expert knowledge, explained everything to me really clearly, and been so reassuring and supportive at such a traumatic and stressful time. She is really kind, approachable, detailed and thorough, and always responded quickly and arranged calls and meetings at times to suit me, making me feel like nothing was too much trouble. I honestly couldn’t have got through the last 2 years without her.
How does the separation process work for unmarried couples?
The law offers less protection when it comes to unmarried couples separating. We can advise you on your rights within the areas of property and financial claims, as well as issues with children. This may be looking at issues of residence, parental responsibility or child maintenance and contact.
If you have signed a cohabitation agreement, which is often recommended for unmarried partners, this will determine how specific assets are split. However, without this, the process will be much more complex upon the separation. This area of separation relies on property and trust law, rather than divorce law. It is important to access the advice we can give you to understand your rights and help you through the complexities.
